How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?

· RecommendedPro

A fair way for a plumber, HVAC company, roofer or electrician to test whether ChatGPT and Gemini name them, what to write down, and how to read the results.

The short answer: ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions a homeowner would ask, without your business name in them, ask each one several ways, write down who gets named, and repeat it on another day. Here is how to do that fairly.

Step 1

Leave your business name out of the question

If you ask "Is Smith Plumbing good?", the assistant will talk about Smith Plumbing. That tells you nothing about whether a stranger would hear your name. Ask the way a homeowner would, with only the job and the town.

Use a private or logged-out window if you can. A signed-in assistant may remember that you asked about your own company before.

Step 2

Ask the same thing three or four ways

Homeowners do not all type the same words, and the answer moves with the wording. One question is a coin flip. Several questions start to show a pattern.

  • "Best emergency plumber in [your city]"
  • "Who should I call for AC repair in [your city]?"
  • "Top-rated roofer near [your town] for hail damage"
  • "Electrician for a panel upgrade in [your city]"

Step 3

Check ChatGPT and Gemini separately

The two assistants do not give the same answer. Gemini leans heavily on Google data such as your Business Profile and reviews. ChatGPT draws on a wider mix of websites and directories. You can be named by one and missing from the other.

Step 4

Write down what you see

For each question, note the date, the assistant, the exact wording, whether you were named, where you appeared in the list, and who was named instead. The names of the other companies are the most useful part. They show you whose listings and pages the assistant trusts in your area.

Step 5

Repeat it on another day

Answers change from day to day. Run the same questions again a week later, and again after you fix something such as your hours or service-area pages. What matters is how often you are named across all the checks, not one good or bad answer.

Or let RecommendedPro run it for you

The free scan does steps 1 to 4 in about a minute: it asks ChatGPT and Gemini homeowner-style questions for your trade and city, then shows your score, who was named instead, and what to fix. Weekly tracking ($39 a month) repeats it every week so you can see the trend. A scan shows what the assistants said that day, not a promise about the next answer a homeowner sees.

Common questions

Why did ChatGPT name me once and not the next time?

The answer is generated fresh each time, and small changes in wording or timing change which companies come up. That is why one test is not enough and a count over several questions is more useful.

Is being on Google Maps the same as being recommended by AI?

No. They overlap, especially for Gemini, but a shop can rank well on Maps and still be left out of a ChatGPT answer, or the reverse.

How long does a manual check take?

About 15 to 20 minutes for four questions on two assistants, plus the time to write down the results. Doing it every week by hand is where most owners give up.
